At a Lecture in Khorfakkan: (SIH) Institute Showcases Traditional Crafts in the UAE
As part of its efforts to preserve the UAE’s cultural heritage, raise awareness of the value of traditional crafts, support craftspeople, and promote the sustainability of cultural heritage as a national legacy passed down and safeguarded by successive generations, the Sharjah Heritage Institute organized a specialized lecture titled “The Current State of Traditional Heritage Crafts in the UAE.” The lecture aimed to highlight the importance of traditional crafts in preserving national identity and cultural heritage, while exploring the challenges and opportunities related to their sustainability and strengthening their presence within the community.
Crafts: Memory and Identity
The Sharjah Heritage Institute – Khorfakkan Branch hosted the lecture at the Literary Council in Khorfakkan. Delivered by Dr. Rashid Khamis Obaid Al Naqbi, the lecture examined the current state of traditional and heritage crafts in the UAE, highlighting their significance as an integral part of the nation’s cultural memory and identity.
The lecture also highlighted the important role of craftspeople in preserving inherited knowledge and skills, as well as their role in passing traditional craftsmanship and expertise on to younger generations. This contributes to ensuring the continuity of these crafts, protecting them from disappearing, and reinforcing their position as a living component of Emirati heritage.
A Discussion on Sustainability
The lecture was attended by a number of heritage enthusiasts, Institute employees, and craftspeople. It also featured an interactive discussion on ways to support traditional crafts, encourage their practice and development, and strengthen their presence within the community, ensuring their continuity as a living and evolving cultural legacy.
Honouring the Lecturer and Craftspeople
At the conclusion of the lecture, Ali Obaid Al Nuaimi, Director of the Sharjah Heritage Institute – Khorfakkan Branch, honoured Dr. Rashid Khamis Obaid Al Naqbi in appreciation of his participation and valuable contribution to the lecture. He also honoured the participating craftspeople in recognition of their efforts and contributions to preserving traditional crafts and passing their knowledge and skills on to future generations.
