15 Feb 2026

Sharjah, February 14, 2026

The 23rd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days witnessed the launch of the Traditional Water Carrier Competition, an innovative activity inspired by historical methods of transporting water to homes. The initiative was introduced to revive one of the authentic features of daily life in the past.

Simulating Historic Water Transport Methods
The competition recreated traditional techniques used to carry water from wells to houses, when residents relied on animals—particularly donkeys—to transport clay jars. The scene reflected the simplicity of life and the spirit of community cooperation that once prevailed.

Wide Participation and Challenges of Speed and Precision
The contest attracted twenty participants who were divided into two-person teams. The challenge depended on both speed and accuracy as competitors carried numbered jars along a route passing two stations before returning to the starting point, amid enthusiastic audience interaction that gave the event a festive atmosphere.

Introducing Younger Generations to Living Heritage
This activity is considered the first of its kind among heritage events, presenting the traditional water-carrying profession in an entertaining competitive format that combines historical depth with popular spirit, helping familiarize younger generations with traditional ways of life.

Cash Awards for the Winners
At the conclusion of the competition, the winning teams were honored with cash prizes: AED 3,000 for first place, AED 2,000 for second, and AED 1,000 for third, in recognition of their performance and competitive spirit.

Heritage in a Contemporary Interactive Format
The competition contributed to highlighting the value of living Emirati heritage by transforming past practices into an interactive experience that revives collective memory in a modern form, attracting audiences and strengthening awareness of cultural heritage.
