(SIH)Institute Evokes the Coastal Memory and Documents the Maritime Life of Dibba Al-Hisn
The Sharjah Institute for Heritage organized a dialogue session entitled “Coastal Memory: The Story of Dibba Al-Hisn,” which explored aspects of the city’s maritime life in the past, including the professions, customs, traditions, and practices associated with it. The session also introduced the various types of boats and their names and uses within the local maritime environment.
Sea Stories and Traditional Chants
The session was organized by the Sharjah Institute for Heritage – Dibba Al-Hisn Branch and moderated by Dr. Ahmed Juma Al-Hindasi, with the participation of Mr. Juma Bin Thalith and storyteller Mohammed Abdulrahman Al-Tunaiji. Al-Tunaiji recalled aspects of the city’s maritime memory, presenting a selection of traditional sea chants and songs once performed by seafarers during their voyages and maritime activities.
The session was attended by a number of employees from government departments in Dibba Al-Hisn, along with residents of the city. The topics discussed sparked notable engagement, bringing to life details of the local maritime and cultural heritage.
Maritime Artifacts and Interactive Workshops
The event featured interactive workshops presented by the Sharjah Maritime Museum, as well as an exhibition of maritime artifacts and traditional tools once used by local seafarers. These displays offered a vivid picture of the nature of maritime life in the past and its various cultural elements.
The session was also accompanied by a photography exhibition featuring visual artist Abdullah Al-Dhahouri, showcasing a number of scenes and features associated with the maritime environment and local heritage.
Honoring the Participants
At the conclusion of the session, Ms. Hind Al-Awani, Director of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage – Dibba Al-Hisn Branch, honored all the participants in recognition of their contributions to enriching the dialogue and highlighting the maritime and cultural heritage of the people of Dibba Al-Hisn, while strengthening the presence of popular memory within the cultural and heritage landscape.
