From Europe to Sharjah: World Folk Arts Set Heritage Days Nights Alive

09 Feb 2026

Sharjah, February 9, 2026

Music, movement and shared memory filled the main stage of Sharjah Heritage Days as international folk troupes continued to transform the festival’s evenings into a vivid celebration of world cultures.

Before packed seating and under warm stage lights, performances from Europe carried audiences across borders through dance and live music rooted in tradition. The atmosphere was lively and intimate, with rhythmic applause and visible engagement from families and visitors of all ages.

The evening opened with the Romanian troupe, whose energetic folk dances reflected the country’s regional diversity. A circular group dance symbolising social unity set the tone, followed by fast-paced partner routines marked by sharp footwork and collective rhythm.

The Ukrainian ensemble followed with visually rich performances inspired by opera traditions. Their presentation combined expressive choreography and layered musical arrangements with classic folk dances that remain central to Ukraine’s cultural identity.

Russia’s troupe brought intensity and pace to the stage, delivering high-energy routines defined by strong gestures, rapid movements and expressive power. The performance highlighted the depth and variety of Russian folk heritage while maintaining a strong emotional connection with the audience.

The night concluded with Portugal’s ensemble, the guest of honour of this year’s edition. Drawing from several regions, particularly the country’s northeast, the group presented rural folk music and dances rooted in everyday life. Simple melodies, traditional costumes and grounded choreography offered a warm and authentic finale.

As Sharjah Heritage Days continues, the international performances reaffirm the festival’s role as a meeting point for cultures, where traditions from different parts of the world come together on one stage and speak through rhythm, movement and shared human experience.
