The Sharjah Institute for Heritage organized an educational tour for a group of human resources trainees in the city of Kalba, aimed at enhancing their knowledge of the city’s cultural and historical heritage and introducing them to its rich array of heritage landmarks that embody the authenticity of the place and the depth of its collective memory. The tour provided an opportunity to explore aspects of Kalba’s local history firsthand and to learn about the importance of heritage sites in preserving cultural memory and strengthening awareness of national identity.

The Memory of Place at Sheikh Saeed’s House

The Sharjah Institute for Heritage – Kalba Branch conducted the tour program at Sheikh Saeed bin Hamad Al Qasimi’s House, where the participants learned about the history and significance of the house, as well as its main halls and heritage collections. They also visited the Spectres of the Beautiful Past exhibition, exploring its exhibits that evoke aspects of traditional Emirati life and offer a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Al-Mikhrafa: A Craft Rooted in the Memory of the Palm

The program concluded with an interactive workshop on making al-mikhrafa, a traditional palm-leaf basket historically associated with the date-harvest season. The workshop gave participants a hands-on opportunity to learn about a traditional craft and practice closely linked to the local environment. It also presented heritage in an engaging and educational way, fostering greater appreciation of its cultural value and supporting efforts to preserve it, safeguard its continuity, and pass it on to future generations through innovative approaches.
