Laughter, movement and rhythmic chants filled the Heritage Square in the Heart of Sharjah as the 23rd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days continued to draw visitors into a living portrait of the past. Through a rich mix of cultural, educational and entertainment programmes, the festival has once again transformed the historic district into a vibrant space where heritage is not only displayed, but actively lived.

In an atmosphere steeped in authenticity, the Popular Games House of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage presented a lively showcase of traditional games on the festival’s main stage. The interactive performance struck a chord with audiences of all ages, reflecting the institute’s ongoing efforts to reconnect younger generations with the customs and values that shaped earlier community life.

The programme opened with Kerabi, a traditional game that relies on balance and physical strength. Two teams compete in a test of endurance, attempting to cross into their opponents’ area or bring them to the ground. The energetic exchanges and friendly rivalry quickly drew cheers from the crowd.

This was followed by Al-Musalsal, a fast-paced group game built around speed, agility and strategic movement. Known for its dynamic chase-and-retreat style, the game encourages physical fitness, teamwork and self-reliance.

Many Emirati folk games are closely linked to songs and chants that heighten excitement and rhythm. These verses revived childhood memories and scenes of play and competition that once formed an essential part of daily life in the past.
