Traditional Water-Fetching Competition Launched at Sharjah Heritage Days

Sharjah, February 14, 2026

A traditional water-fetching competition inspired by the UAE’s early methods of transporting water was launched on Saturday as part of the 23rd edition of Sharjah Heritage Days, offering visitors a lively re-enactment of how water was once carried from wells to homes.
The interactive contest, the first of its kind within the festival’s heritage programme, recreated the historical practice of transporting clay jars from community wells using traditional means. In earlier times, residents relied on animals — particularly donkeys — to carry water-filled earthenware jars, reflecting the simplicity of daily life and the spirit of cooperation that defined Emirati communities.
Speed, Precision and Teamwork
The competition attracted 20 participants, divided into pairs, who competed in a challenge that tested both speed and accuracy. Teams were required to carry numbered clay jars along a designated track, passing through two checkpoints before returning to the starting point.
Balancing the jars carefully while racing against time demanded coordination and focus. The event drew enthusiastic crowds whose cheers and applause added a celebratory atmosphere to the heritage-inspired challenge.
Connecting Generations to Living Traditions
Organisers said the initiative aims to introduce younger generations to traditional ways of life through engaging and competitive activities. By transforming the historic profession of water fetching into an entertaining public event, the competition blended cultural education with community participation.
The activity served as a reminder of a time when securing water required physical effort and collective responsibility — long before the convenience of modern infrastructure.
Honouring the Winners
At the conclusion of the contest, the winning teams were recognised with cash prizes. The first-place team received Dh3,000, second place Dh2,000, and third place Dh1,000, in appreciation of their performance and competitive spirit.
Through initiatives like this, Sharjah Heritage Days continues to present Emirati traditions in dynamic, interactive formats — ensuring that practices once central to survival remain alive as shared memories and cultural experiences for today’s audiences.
